The Ryerson men’s soccer team took a point from the nationally ranked Carleton Ravens on Saturday, but felt they may have let a win slip through their fingers.
The Rams (4-1-3) drew the Ravens 1-1, but conceded the tying goal in the final minute of injury time.
Midfielder Milos Scepanovic scored the Rams’ lone goal in the 86th minute, tucking a penalty kick into the right corner past diving keeper Mark Krocko.
The Rams played tight, defensive soccer until after the 90th minute, but Carleton converted a goal as the result of a scramble in the box.
“We both fought our hearts out and it ended up being a tie,” Scepanovic said. “We should have won, but one lack of concentration in the end and that’s what happens.”
Lost in the emotional rush of a late penalty kick, and the even later draw, was the fact that the Rams are unbeaten in their last seven games.
The team has gone 4-0-3 since an opening day loss to Carleton, and if it didn’t fully avenge the loss, it at least avoided a season sweep. If
the Rams want to win the Ontario University Athletics championship, all roads likely lead through Ottawa.
“Whenever you play Carleton, it’s always a fight,” associate coach Filip Prostran said. “They’re a top-10 team in the country … that’s about as good as it gets. We can play with the best.
“Maybe a veteran team puts them to sleep, but we didn’t quite finish the job,” he added.
At seven games, the Rams are one win or draw away from tying their longest streak, set in 2010.
With games against two opponents it has already beaten, Trent and RMC, it is not inconceivable that the Rams could set a new record in 2012.
The players and coaches maintain that it’s a bad omen to discuss streaks and records, and that when the playoffs start, it won’t matter.
“It doesn’t mean anything yet,” defender Michael Jan said.
The Rams take the pitch Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. in Peterborough before heading to Kingston on the weekend to take on RMC and Queen’s.
